Tate Collins moves in with her brother and meets his friend, Miles Archer, an airline pilot carrying deep emotional scars from his past. Although Miles makes it clear that he doesn’t want love or commitment, the two begin a physical relationship with just two rules: don’t ask about the past, and don’t expect a future. As their connection grows, Tate finds herself falling in love despite the boundaries they’ve set. Through alternating chapters set in the present and in Miles’s past, the novel gradually reveals the heartbreaking event that left him unable to open his heart. Tate must decide whether loving someone with so much pain is worth the risk, while Miles is forced to confront the past he’s been trying to escape. The novel explores themes of grief, healing, forgiveness, and the idea that love can be both painful and transformative.
